The history of a country does not start in any particular place, at any particular moment or with any particular person. Instead, all history is the total compilation of many moments, places and persons. Nevertheless, in the study of the beginnings of our nation, there cannot be any one place that is more dominant than the Tun Tavern. From Tun's early beginning in 1685 with Joshua Carpenter as her innkeeper and Brewmaster, until her sale by Robert Mullen in 1775 when he entered the Continental Marines (now the United State Marine Corps), the Tun Tavern was the people who met in her halls and the people who owned her. From these reflections comes a story that is both the birth of our country and the beginnings of the spirit that is exemplified in our daily lives. And through these reflections, you will see why the Tun Tavern in the city of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania must be considered the foremost building in our early history. She was the forum that allowed the patriotic spirit to grow and the total attitude of the people to be nourished. This formed our nation, for it was through the people who met here and the organizations they founded that our country, the United States of America, has continuously been the greatest nation our world has ever experienced.
